The Scorpion King made his first appearance a year earlier in The Mummy Returns, but was only seen for about 5 minutes. After the great success of the film, Stephen Sommers, who had previously directed both Mummy films, got the ingenious idea to make the Scorpion King the leading role in a new adventure. The Scorpion King is also set in Egypt, but further in the past than The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. The story starts out in the infamous city of Gomorrah, where the evil ruler Memnon (Steven Brand) plans to wipe out all the desert peoples. The few tribes who survive the massacre are mutual enemies, and so face the decision to unite or perish. As the nomads know that Memnon is influenced by the visions of a magician, there is only one way left. The clairvoyant must be killed, and there is only one man capable of doing that: Mathayus (Dwayne The Rock Johnson), a mercenary who has to penetrate into the enemy camp with his soldiers, only to discover that the magician is actually a beautiful woman (Kelly Hu). He just can't bring himself to murder her. Instead, he flees with her into the desert. That is the only place he has a chance to take on Memnon's army, which under the command of General Thorak (Ralf Moeller), is already in hot pursuit. The first battle starts, in which Mathayus is seriously wounded. But he recovers his strength and gets ready for the decisive encounter...
